If you're seeking Microsoft certified training, it stands to reason you'll want training organisations to offer a wide range of the best training programs available today.

If you’re seeking Microsoft certified training, it stands to reason you’ll want training organisations to offer a wide range of the best training programs available today.

Additionally you might hope to get advice on the sort of careers that are available when you’ve finished studying, and the type of individual such a career might be right for. Most students prefer to discuss what the best route is for them.

Once you’ve decided on the area you want to get into, a relevant course needs to be picked that’s suits your ability level and skill set. This can be personally tailored for you.

It’s quite a normal occurrence for students not to check on something of absolutely vital importance – the way the company segments the courseware, and into how many bits.

Individual deliveries for each training module piece by piece, as you complete each module is the usual method of releasing your program. This sounds logical, but you might like to consider this:

Many students find that their training company’s typical path to completion doesn’t suit. They might find a slightly different order suits them better. Perhaps you don’t make it inside of the expected timescales?

In all honesty, the perfect answer is to have their ideal ‘order’ of training laid out, but to receive all the materials up-front. You then have everything if you don’t manage to finish at their required pace.

Finding your first job in the industry can be a little easier with a Job Placement Assistance service. With the massive skills shortage in Great Britain even when times are hard, there isn’t a great need to make too much of this option though. It isn’t so complicated as you might think to get the right work as long as you’ve got the necessary skills and qualifications.

One important thing though, avoid waiting until you have completed your exams before bringing your CV up to date. Right at the beginning of your training, list what you’re working on and get promoting!

A good number of junior support jobs have been bagged by people who are in the process of training and haven’t even passed a single exam yet. At least this will get your CV into the ‘possible’ pile and not the ‘no’ pile.

The most efficient companies to help get you placed are generally independent and specialised local recruitment services. As they will get paid by the employer when they’ve placed you, they’re perhaps more focused on results.

Various students, it seems, invest a great deal of time on their training course (for years sometimes), only to give up at the first hurdle when trying to get the right position. Promote yourself… Do your best to let employers know about you. Don’t think a job’s just going to jump out in front of you.

Most trainers typically provide a shelf full of reference manuals. Obviously, this isn’t much fun and not a very good way of remembering.

If we’re able to involve all our senses in the learning process, our results will often be quite spectacular.

Modern training can now be done at home via easy-to-use DVD or CD ROM’s. Real-world classes from the instructors will mean you’ll learn your subject by way of their teaching and demonstrations. Then it’s time to test your knowledge by practicing and interacting with the software.

Each company you’re contemplating should be able to show you a few samples of the type of training materials they provide. Make sure you encounter videos of instructor-led classes and a wide selection of interactive elements.

Go for CD and DVD ROM based physical training media where possible. You’re then protected from the variability of broadband quality and service.

Every program under consideration should always lead to a properly recognised accreditation as an end-goal – and not a worthless ‘in-house’ plaque for your wall.

From an employer’s viewpoint, only the top companies such as Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA (for instance) provide enough commercial weight. Nothing else will cut the mustard.

Network and computer support workers are ever more in demand in the UK, as companies rely heavily upon their knowledge and ability to fix and repair. As we get to grips with the multifaceted levels of technology, more and more IT professionals are being looked for to dedicate themselves to the many areas we’ve become dependent on.

Consider the following points and pay great regard to them if you believe that over-used sales technique about ‘guaranteeing’ exams sounds like a benefit to the student:

These days, we’re a little more ‘marketing-savvy’ – and usually we realise that of course it is actually an additional cost to us (it’s not a freebie because they like us so much!)

Evidence shows that if students pay for their relevant examinations, one at a time, the chances are they’re going to get through on the first attempt – because they’re aware of what they’ve paid and so will prepare more thoroughly.

Go for the best offer you can find when you’re ready, and keep hold of your own money. You’ll then be able to select where you take your exam – meaning you can choose a local testing centre.

A lot of so-called credible training companies secure huge profits by getting paid for exams at the start of the course and cashing in if they’re not all taken.

You should fully understand that re-takes through training course providers with an ‘Exam Guarantee’ are always heavily controlled. You’ll be required to sit pre-tests until you’ve demonstrated an excellent ability to pass.

With average prices for VUE and Pro-metric tests costing in the region of 112 pounds in this country, the most cost-effective way to cover the cost is by paying when you need them. There’s no sense in throwing away maybe a thousand pounds extra at the start of your studies. A commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools are actually the key to your success.

Starting with the understanding that we have to find the area of most interest first and foremost, before we’re able to chew over which career training ticks the right boxes, how can we choose the right path?

How can we possibly grasp the many facets of a particular career when we’ve never done it? Maybe we have never met anyone who does that actual job anyway.

To come through this, there should be a discussion of a variety of unique issues:

* What hobbies you’re involved with in your spare-time – often these point towards what areas you’ll get the most enjoyment out of.

* Are you driven to get certified for a certain reason – for instance, are you pushing to work based from home (self-employment?)?

* The income needs you may have?

* Always think in-depth about the time expected to achieve their goals.

* Taking a cold, hard look into the effort, commitment and time you can give.

When all is said and done, the most intelligent way of checking this all out is from a meeting with someone that has enough background to be able to guide you.

A useful feature that several companies offer is a Job Placement Assistance program. This is to assist your search for your first position. Don’t get caught up in this feature – it’s quite easy for training companies to make it sound harder than it is. The fact of the matter is, the massive skills shortage in the UK is what will make you attractive to employers.

Having said that, it’s important to have advice and support about your CV and interviews though; and we’d recommend any student to work on polishing up their CV as soon as they start a course – don’t wait until you’ve qualified.

You may not have got to the stage where you’ve qualified when you will be offered your first junior support job; however this isn’t going to happen if interviewers don’t get sight of your CV.

The top companies to get you a new position are generally local IT focused employment agencies. Because they make their money when they’ve found you a job, they’re perhaps more focused on results.

A slight aggravation of some course providers is how much people are focused on studying to get qualified, but how un-prepared that student is to get the job they’re acquired skills for. Don’t give up when the best is yet to come.

Make sure you don’t get caught-up, as many people do, on the training process. Training is not an end in itself; this is about employment. Focus on the end-goal.

Avoid becoming one of those unfortunate students that choose a course which looks like it could be fun – and end up with a plaque on the wall for a career they’ll never really get any satisfaction from.

Take time to understand your leanings around career progression and earning potential, plus your level of ambition. It makes sense to understand what (if any) sacrifices you’ll need to make for a particular role, what accreditations are needed and how to develop your experience.

Always seek guidance and advice from a skilled advisor, even if you have to pay – it’s usually much cheaper and safer to discover early on whether a chosen track will suit, instead of discovering after two full years that you’re doing entirely the wrong thing and have to return to the start of another program.

Anybody thinking about training for the IT industry will soon realise that there are a huge amount of choices available to them. Before starting a training program, look for a training provider that has advisors, so you can be fully informed on the type of work your new knowledge will help you to get. You could uncover job roles you hadn’t considered before.

You can learn anything from Microsoft User Skills up to Databases, Programming, Networking and Web Design. There is so much choice and so you’ll probably need to discuss your requirements with an experienced advisor prior to making your choice: don’t make a guess and start the wrong training for an area that you don’t enjoy!

Today, there are many easy-to-use and sensibly priced options around that will give you everything you need.

One interesting way that colleges make more money is by adding exam fees upfront to the cost of a course and presenting it as a guarantee for your exams. This sounds impressive, but is it really:

In this day and age, we’re a bit more aware of hype – and the majority of us ought to grasp that it is something we’re paying for (it’s not a freebie because they like us so much!)

If it’s important to you to get a first time pass, you must avoid exam guarantees and pay when entering exams, give it the priority it deserves and give the task sufficient application.

Go for the best offer you can find when you’re ready, and keep hold of your own money. You’ll then be able to select where you take your exam – so you can find somewhere local.

Why tie up your cash (or borrow more than you need) for exam fees when there was no need to? A lot of profit is secured by training companies getting money in early for exam fees – and banking on the fact that many won’t be taken.

Most companies will require you to do mock exams and prohibit you from re-taking an exam until you’ve completely proven that you’re likely to pass – so an ‘Exam Guarantee’ comes with many clauses in reality.

Average exam fees were around the 112 pounds mark in the last 12 months via UK VUE or Prometric centres. Therefore, why splash out often many hundreds of pounds extra to get ‘an Exam Guarantee’, when it’s no secret that the best guarantee is a regular, committed, study programme, with an accredited exam preparation system.

Commercial qualifications are now, most definitely, starting to replace the more academic tracks into the IT industry – so why is this the case?

With fees and living expenses for university students spiralling out of control, along with the IT sector’s general opinion that vendor-based training most often has much more commercial relevance, there’s been a dramatic increase in Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe certified training routes that educate students for considerably less.

Of course, an appropriate portion of closely linked detail must be taught, but essential specialisation in the areas needed gives a vendor educated student a huge edge.

When an employer is aware what they’re looking for, then all they have to do is advertise for the particular skill-set required. Commercial syllabuses are all based on the same criteria and don’t change between schools (in the way that degree courses can).

People attracted to this sort of work are often very practical, and aren’t really suited to the classroom environment, and poring through books and manuals. If you identify with this, try the newer style of interactive study, with on-screen demonstrations and labs.

Where we can involve all our senses in the learning process, our results will often be quite spectacular.

Learning is now available in the form of CD and DVD ROM’s, so everything is learned directly from your own PC. Through video streaming, you will be able to see the instructor presenting exactly how something is done, with some practice time to follow – via the interactive virtual lab’s.

Always insist on a demonstration of the study materials from your training provider. You should ask for demo’s from instructors, slideshows and virtual practice lab’s for your new skills.

You should avoid purely online training. You want physical CD/DVD ROM course materials where offered, as you need to be able to use them whenever it’s convenient for you – and not be totally reliant on your internet connection always being ‘up’ and available.

It’s essential to have authorised exam simulation and preparation programs included in your course.

Students regularly can get confused by trying to prepare themselves with questions that aren’t from official sources. It’s not uncommon that the question formats and phraseology is unfamiliar and it’s important to prepare yourself for this.

Ensure that you request some practice exams so you’ll be able to check your understanding at any point. Mock exams add to your knowledge bank – so the real thing isn’t quite as scary.

The CompTIA A+ course covers 4 different sectors – you’ll have to qualify in 2 different areas to be considered A+ competent. This is why, many training establishments restrict their A+ to just two of the 4 sectors. We consider that this is selling you short – sure, you can pass an exam, but knowing about the others will give you greater confidence in industry, where knowledge of all four will be necessary. This is why you need education in the whole course.

As well as learning how to build PC’s and fix them, students on an A+ training course will learn how to work in antistatic conditions, along with remote access, fault finding and diagnostics.

You might also choose to think about adding the CompTIA Network+ training as you can then also take care of computer networks, which means greater employment benefits.

We need to make this very clear: You have to get round-the-clock 24×7 instructor and mentor support. We can tell you that you’ll strongly regret it if you don’t follow this rule rigidly.

Find a good quality service with proper support available at any time you choose (even if it’s early hours on Sunday morning!) Ensure you get direct access to tutors, and not access to a call-in service which takes messages – so you’re constantly waiting for a call-back at a convenient time for them.

The very best programs tend to use an online 24 hours-a-day service combining multiple support operations throughout multiple time-zones. You will be provided with a simple environment which accesses the most appropriate office irrespective of the time of day: Support when you need it.

If you opt for less than online 24×7 support, you’ll quickly find yourself regretting it. You may not need it in the middle of the night, but consider weekends, early mornings or even late evenings at some point.

So many training providers only look at the plaque to hang on your wall, and completely avoid what it’s all actually about – which will always be getting the job or career you want. Always start with the end goal – don’t get hung-up on the training vehicle.

Avoid becoming one of the unfortunate masses who choose a training program that seems ‘fun’ or ‘interesting’ – and get to the final hurdle of an accreditation for something they’ll never enjoy.

You need to keep your eye on where you want to go, and formulate your training based on that – avoid getting them back-to-front. Keep on track – making sure you’re training for something you’ll still be enjoying many years from now.

Sense dictates that you look for advice and guidance from an experienced industry professional before making your final decision on some particular training course, so there’s little doubt that the chosen route will give you the skill-set required for your career choice.

Getting into your first IT role sometimes feels easier to handle if you’re supported with a Job Placement Assistance program. The need for this feature can be bigged up out of proportion though – it’s quite easy for eager sales people to overplay it. Ultimately, the still growing need for IT personnel in this country is what will make you attractive to employers.

Help with your CV and interview techniques is sometimes offered (if it isn’t, consult one of our sites). Make sure you work on your old CV today – don’t leave it till you pass the exams!

Quite often, you’ll land your initial role while you’re still a student (even when you’ve just left first base). If you haven’t updated your CV to say what you’re studying (and it isn’t in the hands of someone with jobs to offer) then you aren’t even in the running!

Generally, you’ll receive better results from an independent and specialised local recruitment consultancy than any training course provider’s national service, because they will be more familiar with the area and local employers.

Many people, apparently, conscientiously work through their course materials (for years sometimes), only to give up at the first hurdle when finding a job. Market yourself… Do everything you can to put yourself out there. Don’t think a job’s just going to jump out in front of you.

Have a conversation with a skilled consultant and they’ll entertain you with many awful tales of how students have been duped by salespeople. Make sure you deal with a skilled professional that asks lots of questions to find out what’s right for you – not for their bank-account! Dig until you find an ideal starting-point that fits you.

Remember, if in the past you’ve acquired any qualifications that are related, then you will often be able to pick-up at a different starting-point to someone who is new to the field.

Opening with a basic PC skills module first is often the best way to start into your IT program, depending on your current skill level.

The Cisco training is intended for individuals who wish to work with routers and switches. Routers hook up computer networks over the internet or dedicated lines. We’d recommend that you should start with the CCNA. It’s not advisable to launch directly into your CCNP for it’s full of complexities – and you need to work up to it to have a go at this.

Routers are linked to networks, therefore it is necessary to have an understanding of the operation of networks, or you’ll struggle with the program and not be able to understand the work. Seek out a program that teaches the basics (for example CompTIA) before you start the CCNA.

Achieving CCNA is where you need to be aiming – don’t be pushed into attempting your CCNP for now. After gaining experience in the working environment, you’ll know if it’s relevant for you to have this next level up. If it is, you’ll have significantly improved your chances of success – because you’ll know so much more by then.

A study programme really needs to work up to a widely recognised certification at the end – not some little ‘in-house’ diploma – fit only for filing away and forgetting.

Unless the accreditation comes from a company like Microsoft, CompTIA, Adobe or Cisco, then chances are it will be commercially useless – because no-one will recognise it.

Commencing with the understanding that we need to find the market that sounds most inviting first, before we’re able to weigh up what development program meets that requirement, how can we choose the correct route?

What is our likelihood of grasping the many facets of a particular career when we’ve never done it? Maybe we have never met anyone who performs the role either.

To attack this, we need to discuss a number of core topics:

* Your personality type as well as your interests – what kind of work-related things please or frustrate you.

* Do you want to obtain training due to a precise raison d’etre – i.e. are you looking at working from home (self-employment?)?

* What scale of importance is the salary – is it of prime importance, or do you place job satisfaction higher up on the priority-scale?

* There are many ways to train in IT – it’s wise to achieve a basic understanding of what makes them different.

* You have to understand what differentiates each individual training area.

In actuality, you’ll find the only real way to research these matters tends to be through a good talk with an experienced advisor that has years of experience in the IT industry (and specifically it’s commercial needs.)

If your advisor doesn’t ask many questions – it’s likely they’re just trying to sell you something. If they push a particular product before learning about your history and current experience level, then you know it’s true.

Occasionally, the training start-point for a trainee with a little experience is often massively different to the student with none.

Working through a basic PC skills module first will sometimes be the most effective way to start into your computer program, depending on your current skill level.

Consider the points below very carefully if you’ve been persuaded that that over-used sales technique about an ‘Exam Guarantee’ sounds great value:

You’re paying for it somehow. One thing’s for sure – it isn’t free – it’s simply been shoe-horned into the price as a whole.

If it’s important to you to get a first time pass, you must fund each exam as you take it, prioritise it appropriately and apply yourself as required.

Isn’t it in your interests to hold on to your money and pay for the exam at the appropriate time, not to pay any mark-up to a training course provider, and to take it closer to home – rather than possibly hours away from your area?

Why borrow the money or pay in advance (plus interest of course) on examinations when you don’t need to? Big margins are made by companies getting paid upfront for exams – and hoping either that you won’t take them, or it will be a long time before you do.

It’s worth noting that exam re-takes via training course providers with an ‘Exam Guarantee’ are tightly controlled. You’ll be required to sit pre-tests to make sure they think you’re going to pass.

The cost of exams was about 112 pounds in the last 12 months through Prometric or VUE centres around the United Kingdom. So don’t be talked into shelling out hundreds or thousands of pounds more to get ‘an Exam Guarantee’, when any student knows that the best guarantee is consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software.

There are a range of options in existence for trainees wanting to find a job in the computer industry. To help you decide on a good match for you, look for a company with advisors who can help you find an ideal career for your character, or at least explain what the job entails, to confirm you’ve found the right one.

Should you be considering becoming more IT literate, perhaps with a Microsoft Office Package, or possibly becoming professionally qualified, you can choose from many training options.

By utilising modern training techniques and keeping costs to a minimum, there’s a new style of course provider offering a better quality of training and support for a fraction of the prices currently charged.

Authorised exam preparation and simulation materials are essential – and really must be supplied by your training company.

Often students can be thrown off course by practising exam questions that don’t come from authorised sources. Quite often, the way questions are phrased is startlingly different and you need to be ready for this.

Why don’t you test whether you’re learning enough by doing tests and mock ups of exams before you take the actual exam.

With all the options available, does it really shock us that the majority of career changers get stuck choosing the job they will follow.

As having no solid background in the IT industry, how could any of us understand what any job actually involves?

Arriving at an informed choice only comes from a thorough study of many shifting key points:

* Your personality can play a major role – what things get your juices flowing, and what are the activities that put a frown on your face.

* Do you want to get qualified because of a particular reason – e.g. do you aim to work at home (maybe self-employment?)?

* Any personal or home requirements you have?

* Many students don’t properly consider the amount of work required to get fully certified.

* Having a good look at how much time and effort you can give.

In actuality, you’ll find the only real way to research these matters will be via a meeting with a professional who has experience of Information Technology (as well as the commercial needs.)

A skilled and professional consultant (as opposed to a salesman) will want to thoroughly discuss your current experience level and abilities. This is useful for working out your study start-point.

Of course, if you’ve got any work-experience or certification, then it’s not unreasonable to expect to commence studying further along than someone who is new to the field.

If you’re a new trainee embarking on IT studies from scratch, it’s often a good idea to avoid jumping in at the deep-end, kicking off with some basic PC skills training first. Usually this is packaged with most types of training.

Of course: the training program or a certification isn’t what this is about; the career that you want is. Far too many training organisations put too much weight in the actual accreditation.

It’s possible, for instance, to get a great deal of enjoyment from a year of study and then spend 20 miserable years in something completely unrewarding, as an upshot of not doing the correct research at the beginning.

It’s well worth a long chat to see what industry will expect from you. What particular qualifications you’ll need and how to gain experience. It’s also worth spending time considering how far you wish to build your skill-set as it will often present a very specific set of accreditations.

We advise all students to chat with experienced industry personnel before following a particular training programme. This gives some measure of assurance that it contains the relevant skills for that career path.

Computer and network support technicians are constantly sought after in Great Britain, as organisations are becoming more reliant upon their knowledge and skills. Whereupon our society becomes growingly beholden to our PC’s, we simultaneously inevitably become more reliant on the commercially qualified network engineers, who maintain those systems.

Some commercial training providers only give office hours or extended office hours support; most won’t answer after 8-9pm at the latest and frequently never at the weekends.

Avoid, like the plague, any organisations who use ‘out-of-hours’ call-centres – with your call-back scheduled for office hours. It’s not a lot of help when you’ve got study issues and could do with an answer during your scheduled study period.

Be on the lookout for study programmes that have multiple support offices active in different time-zones. Each one should be integrated to provide a single interface and also round-the-clock access, when you need it, with no fuss.

Never make do with less than you need and deserve. Direct-access round-the-clock support is the only way to go with computer-based training. Maybe burning the midnight-oil is not your thing; but for most of us, we’re at work while the support is live.

People attracted to this sort of work are often very practical, and won’t enjoy sitting at a desk in class, and slogging through piles of books. If this could be you, go for more modern interactive training, where you can learn everything on-screen.

Our ability to remember is increased with an involvement of all our senses – educational experts have expounded on this for decades now.

Learning is now available on CD and DVD discs, so everything is learned directly from your own PC. Utilising the latest video technology, you will be able to see the instructor presenting exactly how something is done, and then have a go at it yourself – via the interactive virtual lab’s.

It’s very important to see the type of training provided by any company that you may want to train through. Be sure that they contain instructor-led video demonstrations with virtual practice-lab’s.

Avoiding training that is delivered purely online is generally a good idea. Always choose CD or DVD based study materials where offered, as you need to be able to use them whenever it’s convenient for you – it’s not wise to be held hostage to your internet connection always being ‘up’ and available.

An advisor that doesn’t ask many questions – it’s more than likely they’re just a salesperson. If someone pushes specific products before looking at your personality and experience, then it’s definitely the case.

With a bit of real-world experience or some accreditation, your starting-point of learning is not the same as someone new to the industry.

Where this will be your first attempt at IT study then it may be wise to cut your teeth on user-skills and software training first.

Only consider study programs that lead to commercially acknowledged accreditations. There’s a plethora of small companies promoting unknown ‘in-house’ certificates which will prove unusable when it comes to finding a job.

From an employer’s viewpoint, only the major heavyweights like Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA (as an example) will open the right doors. Anything less won’t make the grade.

If you think Cisco training might be for you, but you’ve no practical experience with routers or network switches, we’d recommend taking the CCNA training. This will give you knowledge and skills to work with routers. The world wide web is built up of many routers, and national or international corporations with many locations also rely on them to allow their networks of computers to communicate.

Routers connect to networks, so it’s essential to have an understanding of how networks function, or you will have difficulties with the program and not be able to follow the work. Look for a course that includes basic networking skills (such as CompTIA) prior to starting your CCNA.

It’s a good idea to find a tailored course that will add in the necessary skills ahead of starting your training in Cisco skills.

Huge changes are washing over technology as we approach the second decade of the 21st century – and it only gets more exciting every day.

Society largely thinks that the technological advancement we have experienced is easing off. This couldn’t be more wrong. Terrific advances are ahead of us, and most especially the internet is going to dominate how we conduct our lives.

And don’t forget that on average, the income of a person in the IT industry in the United Kingdom is much more than remuneration packages in other industries, so in general you’ll probably receive considerably more as an IT specialist, than you could reasonably hope to achieve elsewhere.

It would appear there is no end in sight for IT jobs increases across Britain. The sector is still growing hugely, and as we have a skills gap that means we only typically have three IT workers for every four jobs it’s most unlikely that it will even slow down for decades to come.

Traditional teaching in classrooms, using textbooks and whiteboards, is an up-hill struggle for the majority of us. If all this is ringing some familiar bells, look for learning programmes which feature interactive and multimedia modules.

Recent studies into the way we learn shows that memory is aided when we receive multi-sensorial input, and we get practically involved in what we’re studying.

Modern training can now be done at home via self-contained CD or DVD materials. Through instructor-led video classes you’ll find things easier to remember via the expert demonstrations. You can then test yourself by interacting with the software and practicing yourself.

You’ll definitely want a look at some courseware examples from the school that you’re considering. The package should contain expert-led demonstrations, slideshows and fully interactive skills-lab’s.

You should avoid purely online training. Physical CD or DVD ROM materials are preferable where obtainable, so you can use them wherever and whenever you want – you don’t want to be reliant on your broadband being ‘up’ 100 percent of the time.

Proper support is incredibly important – ensure you track down something that provides 24×7 direct access, as not opting for this kind of support could hamper your progress.

Try and find training with help available at all hours of the day and night (even if it’s early hours on Sunday morning!) Make sure it’s always 24×7 direct access to mentors and instructors, and not simply some messaging service that means you’re constantly waiting for a call-back when it’s convenient for them.

The best trainers use multiple support centres active in different time-zones. Online access provides the interactive interface to seamlessly link them all, any time of the day or night, help is just seconds away, with no hassle or contact issues.

Don’t accept second best with the quality of your support. Many students who throw in the towel, just need the right support system.

A so-called advisor who doesn’t question you thoroughly – it’s more than likely they’re really a salesperson. If they push a particular product before learning about your history and whether you have any commercial experience, then you know you’re being sold to.

If you’ve got any commercial experience or certification, you may find that your starting point is not the same as someone new to the industry.

For students commencing IT study from scratch, it’s often a good idea to start out slowly, by working on user-skills and software training first. This is often offered with most accreditation programs.

CompTIA A+ consists of 4 training sections; you’re considered A+ competent when you’ve passed the test for half of them. This is the reason that the majority of training establishments only have two of the courses on their syllabus. In reality you’re advised to have the information on each subject as industry will demand an understanding of the whole A+ program. You don’t have to take all four exams, but we would recommend you study for all four areas.

Training courses in A+ teach diagnostic techniques and fault-finding – via hands on and remote access, in addition to building, fixing, repairing and having knowledge of antistatic conditions.

Should you want to work towards looking after computer networks, you should add Network+ to the CompTIA A+ training you’re doing. Including Network+ will put you in a position to get a higher paid position. Alternatively, you may prefer the Microsoft networking qualifications (MCP, MCSA and MCSE).

We can guess that you probably enjoy fairly practical work – a ‘hands-on’ type. If you’re like us, the world of book-reading and classrooms is something you’ll force on yourself if you absolutely have to, but you really wouldn’t enjoy it. Consider interactive, multimedia study if book-based learning really isn’t your style.

If we’re able to get all of our senses involved in our learning, then the results are usually dramatically better.

You can now study via interactive discs. Through instructor-led video classes you’ll learn your subject through the demonstrations and explanations. Then you test your knowledge by interacting with the software and practicing yourself.

You really need to look at courseware examples from any company that you may want to train through. It’s essential they incorporate video demo’s and interactive elements such as practice lab’s.

You should avoid purely online training. You want physical CD/DVD ROM course materials where possible, as you need to be able to use them whenever it’s convenient for you – ISP quality varies, so you don’t want to be totally reliant on your internet connection always being ‘up’ and available.

Validated exam preparation and simulation materials are vital – and really must be obtained from your course provider.

Make sure that the simulated exams aren’t just asking you the right questions on the right subjects, but additionally ask them in the way the real exams will ask them. This throws people if the questions are phrased in unfamiliar formats.

Ensure that you verify your knowledge through tests and simulated exams prior to taking the real thing.

An important area that is sometimes not even considered by trainees considering a training program is ‘training segmentation’. This is essentially how the program is broken down into parts to be delivered to you, which can make a dramatic difference to what you end up with.

Drop-shipping your training elements one piece at a time, according to your own speed is the usual method of releasing your program. While sounding logical, you might like to consider this:

What would their reaction be if you find it difficult to do each and every module at the speed they required? Often the prescribed exam order doesn’t come as naturally as some other structure would for you.

Ideally, you’d get ALL the training materials right at the beginning – giving you them all for the future to come back to – at any time you choose. This also allows you to vary the order in which you move through the program if you find another route more intuitive.

Does job security truly exist anymore? In the UK for instance, with industry changing its mind at alarming speeds, it seems increasingly unlikely.

Whereas a marketplace with high growth, with a constant demand for staff (as there is a massive shortfall of commercially certified workers), opens the possibility of true job security.

Offering the IT market for example, the 2006 e-Skills analysis highlighted a skills shortage throughout Great Britain of around 26 percent. Showing that for each four job positions in existence throughout IT, we’ve only got three properly trained pro’s to fulfil that role.

Properly trained and commercially educated new employees are consequently at a total premium, and it seems it will continue to be so for a long time to come.

Unquestionably, now, more than ever, really is the very best time to train for IT.

There are four A+ exams and areas of study, but you’re just expected to get certified in 2 to be considered A+ competent. For this reason, most training colleges only offer 2 paths. But allowing you to learn about all 4 options will provide you with a far greater perspective of the subject, which you’ll find an important asset in professional employment.

Qualifying in CompTIA A+ on its own will set you up to repair and fix stand alone Macs, computers and laptops; principally ones that aren’t joined to a network – essentially the domestic or small business sector.

It could be a good idea to consider adding Network+ training to your A+ as it will give you the knowledge to look after networks of computers, and become a more senior IT professional.

Beware of putting too much emphasis, as can often be the case, on the training process. You’re not training for the sake of training; this is about gaining commercial employment. Focus on the end-goal.

You could be training for only a year and end up doing the job for 20 years. Don’t make the error of finding what seems like a program of interest to you and then put 10-20 years into something you don’t even enjoy!

Make sure you investigate your leanings around career progression and earning potential, plus your level of ambition. You need to know what (if any) sacrifices you’ll need to make for a particular role, what accreditations are needed and how to develop your experience.

As a precursor to beginning a study programme, it’s good advice to chat over the exact market needs with a skilled advisor, to make sure the training path covers everything needed.

If you’re thinking of using a training school that is still using workshops as a benefit of their course, then consider these problems met by most IT hopefuls:

* A lot of journeys to the centre – normally quite a distance away.

* Workshop accessibility; often weekdays only and sometimes two to three days together. It’s not easy to get the days away from work.

* Lost holiday days – a lot of workers only get 4 weeks annual leave. If you give up at least half to your educational events, you haven’t got a great deal of holiday time remaining for students and their families.

* ‘In-Centre’ days fill up fast and often end up larger than is ideal.

* Some trainees lean towards a slower or quicker pace than the rest of the class. This can create a lot of tension amongst the class.

* A lot of trainees talk of the high costs involved with all the travelling back and forth to the training centre while forking out for food and accommodation can get very high.

* Study privacy can be high on the list of priorities to many trainees. You don’t want to lose any job advancement, wage increases or accomplishment in your job just because you’re retraining. If your employer knows you’re taking steps towards accreditation in another sector, what will they think?

* Asking questions in front of other class-mates often makes us feel uncomfortable. Ever avoided asking a question as you honestly thought you might seem thick?

* Working and living away – a lot of attendees find they’re living or working somewhere else for part of their training. Days in-centre become very difficult then, unfortunately the money has already changed hands as part of your fees.

Many students discover a more flexible approach is to exploit ready-made, videoed workshops in the comfort of your own home – and do it when it’s convenient to you – not anybody else.

Do them at home on your PC or if you have laptop, why not get outside if the weather’s nice. If you’ve got questions, then use the provided 24×7 live support (that should come with any technical program.)

It’s never going to matter how regularly you have to re-cover a topic, video-based instructors aren’t ever likely to rush you! Plus, with this method, note-taking becomes a thing of the past. Everything’s laid out there for you when you need it.

Could it be simpler: You avoid travelling and wasting time and money; plus you end up with a more relaxed training environment.
